NDIS & Schizophrenia

In Australia it is estimated that 1 in every 100 people will develop schizophrenia. Schizophrenia usually emerges between late teens to mid-30s and with the peak of the first psychotic episode varying depending on gender. Males usually experience their first episode during early to mid-20s and females experience their first episode late 20s, however this timing can vary due to unique factors affecting the individual.

The characteristic symptoms of schizophrenia may involve dysfunctions in areas such as emotional, cognitive and behavioral with the main symptoms being delusions; hallucinations; disorganized speech and negative symptoms and lasting for at least 6 months. With the level of functioning such as in; self-care, personal relationships and work significantly impaired.

Additionally, Individuals with schizophrenia may experience; disturbed sleep patterns, social cognition deficits, may attend to and interpret irrelevant events or situations as meaningful which may contribute to delusions, or deficits in personal relationships, self-care and other areas.

A Psychologist can assist a person with schizophrenia to better manage their symptoms. This can be done by incorporating evidence-based strategies and therapies for people with schizophrenia.
